Parliaments are the cornerstone of modern democracies, yet citizens struggle to understand what they do and how they can monitor decisions made on their behalf. Despite considerable advances in open‑access data policies, the sheer volume of information and hard‑to‑navigate interfaces significantly hamper citizens’ access to the work of their elected representatives. AI can be part of the answer, but is it trustworthy enough to become a gateway between citizens and their representatives?
The University of Strathclyde, University College Dublin, and Transparency International EU joined forces to take on this challenge. The result is ParliView, a joint AI‑powered transparency platform to help citizens better understand the work of the European Parliament. Through ParliView, we investigate how AI models operate in the democratic sphere to develop standards addressing the urgent need for clear, verifiable and impartial information. We ask the hard questions to explore what is required for AI to strengthen, rather than undermine, democratic transparency.
How can we prevent opaque systems and manipulative practices from eroding public trust? What do genuine independent oversight and governance look like in practice? Are we ready for a future where AI might become the primary interface between citizens and their MEPs?
Join us on 1st October in Brussels, together with MEP Brando Benifei, co‑rapporteur on the AI Act, Sofia Calabrese from the European Partnership for Democracy, Rudi Borrmann from the Open Government Partnership and the ParliView team to decode cutting‑edge findings, discover the platform and reflect on how we can collectively ensure AI remains accountable to citizens.
